It is also worth saying that as you get closer to the Equator, both from the north and from the south, you get more and more tropical. Rio is not anywhere near as tropical as Belem in the Amazon. It is a question of when you are traveling and how much tropical you want. The rainy season in the tropics can really put a crimp in your travels. For my region, around the State of Alagoas, this means May through July. In other parts it would be a bit different. By definition, the tropics of South America is everywhere north of an almost straight line between Rio de Janeiro in Brazil to Antofagasta in northern Chile. Because of the Andes mountain range and the deserts of Peru, many places in the tropical parts of South America don't look like what you normally think of when you imagine what it's like "in tropical areas". As long as you stay on the coast between Rio de Janeiro and all the way up to Central America, you are likely to find your tropical paradise nearby.
