Just be yourself. Exercise your common sense and you'll be fine.

Some advice.....

1. Dont carry too much cash on your body.
2. Respect the local sentiments....dont show off too much skin when in rural areas, take off your shoes etc when entering religious places etc.
3. Dont move out alone late in the night.
4. And most importantly....be patient. India can be really rewarding if only you allow things to settle down a bit.

Bottomline is....dont be bogged down by all the misconceptions floating around. Indians in general are friendly hospitable people. Enjoy your travel.

As a women traveling alone in India will mean the occasional groping in busses and other rather uncomfortable moments as the testosteron levels seems to be very high, maybe he food, the weather who will know. Avoid crowded areas, be careful in the evening, wear clothes that do not reveal to much skin and if needed hiss like a cat and bite like a tiger in case your privacy is being invaded.

Get out of the big cities and see small towns and the countryside. The people are less likely to be used to travelers and they are genuinely curious and polite.

You'll get stared at A LOT, and Indians don't really know what "personal space" is. I've spent many train rides with some woman or kid practically in my lap, or some man smelling my armpit while standing on a a bus.

I always ride second class sleeper, and I choose the top bunk when possible. You get to enjoy the local people but when you want to be left a lone you can climb up to your bunk and be left "alone" as much as possible!

Learn a few words in Hindi - it REALLY makes a difference when you're trying to buy something or when trying to learn about the people around you.

Enjoy your travels!

Just be confident, and follow the general rules of travel and you will be safe. Don't do friendship with strangers. In general India is peaceful country. If you found anything wrong just go to Police.
