How can I travel from Salvador to Manaus?

I am planning a 5mth trip to South America from Sept- Feb.
My last leg of the trip will be in Brazil. I have worked out an itinary, starting from Foz de Iguacu, onto Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro & then Salvador.
But I would like to do an Amazon rivertrip. It would be mid/end January -is this the rainy season? Will I see much?
Would I have to travel by boat from Salvador to Manaus via Belem & Santarem? What is this journey like as I have read it can take up to 5 days sleeping in a hammock on the boat?
Or can I get a cheap internal flight?
thanking you in advance

Disease in Peru

Our travel agent said that cholrea is no stranger to Peru, also we need malaria suppressants, yellow fever, hepatitis and typhoid shots. How prevelant are these diseases? My husband is a very fit and healthy 78 year old and I wonder if it's too risky for him to travel in Peru. We plan on going to Lima, Machu Picchu, Cuzco and maybe the Amazon. Anything advice you can give will be welcome. Thanks for you help.

I am going to be in Argentina this July and am interested in going to the Perito Moreno Glacier area and am wondering what it is like that time of year--how cold is it, is it possible to take the boat tours to see the glacier, is the weather clear or over
