The trite and obvious answer to that question is: it depends on what you are looking for?
Are you going on a honeymoon? Are you going with kids? How adventurous are you? There are 6 island you can visit in Hawaii, each with their own charm.
Kauai was like another country contrary to the mainland. Honolulu was very similar to any American coastal city. Kauai felt footloose and fancy free.Honolulu seemed like an inviting city with a plethora of amazing sites to see and photograph. The new interisland ferry should enable you to see much of the diversity of many of these well inhabited and wild favorite places in Hawaii.
I live in Hawaii am am happy to offer some suggestions. This depends alot on what you want to do. Culture and city life??? Gotta be Honolulu, on Oahu. Hiking up to lava you can stick your hiking stick into? Go to the Big Island! Solitude and no distractions...head for Molakai. Maui is your best for party scenes (not me)...my recommendation that covers the best of many of these is to rent a house on the northern shore of Hawaii.Stay out of Waikiki...head for the 'real' Hawaii.
PLEASE Note (not to contradict a previous suggestion, but, well...I read the Honolulu news!)...the ferry from Oahu has been suspended, so don't plan on being able to use it.
