What is the best way to travel along the Great Coast Road if you cannot afford to hire a car?

I would like to travel from Melbourne to Sydney along the Great Coast Road. If necessary, I can rent a car, but I was wondering if there was a more affordable way to go. Thanks!!

Do you mean the Great Ocean Road? With the 12 Apostles and stuff like that? I ask because that's in the other direction from Melbourne than Sydney.

Renting a car will give you the most flexibility to stop where you want to for as long as you want to. Otherwise there would be plenty of charter companies that will take you out in a group and stop at all the major viewpoints. To keep costs down you could try to gather some other folks to share the rental and petrol cost - post a note in a hostel or on travel message boards. Again, you might not have the flexibility you want.
