You'll probably want permission to work in the UK, and there are a couple of approaches available. The question is, for which ones might you qualify for?
* Proper working visa, DiY: available for qualified individuals with specific, desired skill sets
* Proper working visa, company sponsored: Basically, get a job with a company that has an office in the UK they want you to work at
* Heritage visa: If have a parent or grand partent that was a British citizen, then you can apply for a visa--this is a path to citizenship.
* Student visa: you'll have to be accepted and enrolled in a school, but I believe you are allowed to work some
* BUNAC student work visa: only valid for six months (for Americans), you must have been a student in the past twelve months, and under 29 (?)
* Get married to your partner and tag along on his visa :)
There is also the illegal option, but that might be tough and would prohibit travel to and from the UK while you are there.
A word to the wise: These immigration issues are tough, varied and very legalistic. You'll want to learn about the specifics well ahead of time. Also not that the UK is very strict with immigrations procedures and rules.
