Question
Vaccinations for travel to Nicaragua
Hi! I'm traveling to Nicaragua for the first time this July (2 week stay). I've heard/read conflicting reports of what vaccinations I should have up to date before entering the country. Anyone have advice? Is malaria medication really necessary?
Any feedback is greatly appreciated...Thanks!

I am not a doctor, however we have been here for almost 4 years. We have never taken Malaria medications. We have several travelers who stay with us from Canada, they take it. You have to take it perhaps a wk prior to travel and after as well.
We are in San Juan Del Sur area. I believe you can come without it, however if it makes you feel better take it, can't hurt
I lived in Mexico for 4 years in the 1980s travelling to many remote areas. I've done the same in Costa Rica, Peru, Ecuador, Argentina, Brazil and Argentina and never got shots or took malaria meds.
At age 65, before a trip to Thailand, I decided to get the shots recommended by the Dept. of State in the US. I completed them all except for the malaria meds. It was too late for that.
In the US, it can be quite costly to get even routine vaccinations. It cost me around $250. Compared to the total cost of the trip, that's negligible.
If it adds to your comfort and enjoyment of the trip, why not? Be careful though, malaria meds do have side effects and not all meds work for the malaria in a given location.
