You might want to check out a website called autodriveaway.com where there are people that need their car to be driven from one place to another and can often be from coast to coast. That way you wouldn't have to worry about insurance, license plates, etc. Good luck and have fun! Be sure to stop in Chicago along the way...it's a fantastic city!!
Buying a car in the US can be very expensive. Depending on where you buy you would have to pay local tax and licensing fees. In order to do this you need to have an address. This is time consuming as well as expensive. Renting a car is an option as there are some that are inexpensive (relatively at $35.00 US/day) and you could forgo the insurance and licensing fees. Otherwise you could piece together bus and train routes. Amtrak, Greyhound, Green Tortise, Ride share on Craigslist. Those are probably the cheapest way. Good Luck!
