intending to use trans siberian express (not using a travel agent) from Russia to Mongolia, stay with a local family in Ulan Bator if poss, anyone got any advice or good websites ?

This guy has LOTS of info about train travel including the Trans-Siberian Railway (note there is no "express", but the TSR is often referred to as an express by mistake.)
