I'm looking to travel to New Zealand ona working oliday visa. Aside from fruit picking and similar what other types of job are available to a traveller? Is there a possibility of getting work in the big cities?

100%, you shouldnt have a problem finding work in New zealand. Most people going over will work in the service industry.
Backpackers are valued in callcentres also as they tend to do a lot of the outbound sales work that locals may not be interested in.
