Question

I headed to Morocco for two weeks. What are the "must see" places? There is so much to choose from.

Having gone there every year for three years running my top list is:

1) Essaouira, beautiful city on the coast, probably the second-most laid back place in Morocco

2) Chefchaouen, the most laid-back place in Morocco up in the Rif with the kif (google that if you don't already know what it is)

3) Merzouga, dunes and desert (worth it if you have your own transport.

4) Rabat is a great city, though often overlooked

5) Fez, for the souq

6) Tangier can be fun as an independent traveler

Places I would avoid are Marrakech and Agadir, way too touristy, and Casablanca, it's a dump.
Other than that the country is great, people are friendly, and a few words of Arabic go a long way.
Just remember "la shukran" (no thank you) and you'll ne fine

Having spent a few weeks there 1.5yrs ago I too agree with Wondergeek on some points:

Essaouira - truely beautiful and so great for photos not to mention a great chill out place and kite surfing if you are into it!

Marrakesh was fantastic and I loved losing myself in the Madina. Oh god and the amazing food at the night stalls in the market place - we ate almost every night at stall #1.

Fez was also good but only for the medina and you must go up and see the Tannery - yes can smell on a bad day but great viewing - just don't get caught into buying something you don't want - trust me they are very hard salesman!

Public transport is great and I used it everywhere only purchasing tickets a day or two in advance.

You don't really need to do an organised tour as the people are friendly but you do need some french or arabic as not everyone will speak english.

You'll have a ball.
