price should dictate your route and I can only give you info about colombia, dont hesitate to ask again when your planning to travel through colombia.
Sorry, I don’t have any idea from this route. Though I had been to S America twice but never from NZ so can’t help you out.
Hi Ste. McArthur ~
I read with great interest the story somewhere on the site here called Breakfast in Buenos Aires, Dinner in Machu Picchu. It had some great pictures and ideas of places to see and places to stay and stuff to do. You might see if you can find it.
I would definitely suggest spendng time in Buenos Aires, eating some dulce de leche (one of my favorite things there) and chorizo and checking out the city. Definitely walk around in the city - it's really beautiful and there's lots to see. You can grab the Buquebus at the port in Argentina and go up to Uruguay for a couple of days. It lands in Colonia, which is a neat old 15th or 16th century city, but if you can rent a car there you can go up the coast to Montevideo or Punta del Este. Google these places for more info. You might also check out Patagonia - I actually came across this website and thought it looked kind of cool, although maybe a bit pricey www.patagoniacamp.com . Anthony Bourdain just did an episode on Chile that included Santiago and Valparaiso and you can check www.travelchannel.com for that, and other ideas. Also in Argentina, while I'm thinking of it, check out Salta (Google for more info). I also read on the site here that there are less touristy places than Rio in Brazil that deserve a visit, so maybe some research on that would be of value.
I guess it all depends on what you want to do, how much you want to spend, if your goal is to see as many places as possible or to get a little deeper into the cultures. After you decide on some places you want to visit, you might check on airfares between cities, travel time between places, what makes the most sense, etc. when you're putting together your route.
I know this is all kind of random, but I hope it's helpful in at least getting you started. Good luck and happy travels!
Alanna
