Ok, I sort of answered my own question. I can see how if you click down to the right level you can find Insiders. For example I'm an Insider for Oregon so it lists me when in the Oregon level. But it gets a little confusing since those Insiders don't show up for North America or Portland. Up or down a level and there's nothing. So unless someone applies to be an insider for every level of a country/region/city someone could be missing out on valuable info.
When someone applies to be an Insider do they need to apply to every subset of the location? Ie. I live in Portland but also have some good Oregon info so I should apply to both?

I am still poking my way around...but the interface could be a little livelier. I think this is supposed to run like Yahoo! answers? It would also be good to be able to set up alerts associated with a certain page (maybe that functionality is there, but I didn't find it).

Also, can only insiders answer the questions? If not...how is this different than the boards? Just curious.

Ok, so I just reread the email Sean sent. This seems to definitely work like Yahoo! answers. If that is the case, I would avoid ranking folks who answer, because that just makes people answer to boost their post count.

Also, if everyone can answer, I don't see what difference Insider status can make. And, if this is the case...it seems this would compete with the boards. Right now, the insiders seem to run as a more one-on-one contact (at least in my experience). If this is another question asking tool...then will the whole board shift to this? What would the point of the board be if people are coming here to ask questions? I see the board devolving to only non-travel stuff, with all the travel questions being asked here. Perhaps that is the plan, but if not, there needs to be some clear guidelines around how to use these things.

Annie's points are good. I think you really need to think about how this platform is going to interact/compete with the forums. Presumably, all of your Insiders are also somewhat active on the forums. I could just as easily ask Annie a question about SFO on the forums as I could come here and ask. Plus there, I can have a little more back and forth.

I just started looking, but my initial thoughts concern interface which are probably not important yet. When I click on anything and the screen refreshes it sends me all the way to the top of the page, but everything is at the bottom of the page so I have to scroll back down again. I'd try to remedy that.

Thirding Annie and skobb, differentiating this from the boards is a little murky and I'm probably being a little slow here so bear with me. Is the end result that on the 'regular/old' forums insiders will be emailed about something within their expertise and when they post on it that brown "Insider" stamp will be on the post? Or will this Insider forum always remain separate? I understand and dig the ranking thing but I think there's far too much chance of it being abused. Just look in the regular forums at the check mark system. The few people who use it generally do so to pump themselves up or pick on someone they just don't care for. I'm not sure how you could get a ranking system that couldn't be so abused.

Is there a way to search for who the insiders of a particular area are? Say I want to know who is an insider for Asia, or if there are any, can I find that info?

Where do the geographic break downs come from? For instance, I start at Earth, then Europe, then Eastern Europe, then Ukraine, and then the cities of Nikolaev, Kiev, Odessa, Yalta, and something else I forget. How were those cities picked because the place most likely for backpackers to come is Lviv and it isn't listed. Can we change that somehow or are the locations being pulled from some master database?

I prefered the 'old' way when I could browse the insider list and there was a brief description about the insider. I liked e-mailing directly so that I knew a little something about the insider that was answering my questions. I also liked that questions came directly to me. I do not browse the questions to find one I can answer. That is too time consuming for me.
