Question

Going to LA in mid July

We are traveling with 13 yo daughter and looking for family oriented things to do. Planning to travel primarily in Southern half of the state. I know the heat/humidity/mosquitos will be bad then, but it is summer vacation so we are stuck with that time of year. Like to experience a variety of things. I can't find any festivals to see, but those would be great to learn of the culture.

Not to worry about the heat and humidity. You'll do just fine. The first thing you have to plan to attend is the Swamp Pop Festival at the Ascension Civic Center in Sorrento, just south of Gonzales (one of my sons and 2 grandsons live here) - which is just south of Baton Rouge. That's on July 17 and 18. Here's the link: http://www.swamppopmusicfest.com/home.php Then beat the heat at Blue Bayou Water Park in Baton Rouge http://www.bluebayou.com/ and go take a tour at Alligator Bayou http://www.alligatorbayou.com/ Then move north of Baton Rouge to St. Francisville http://www.stfrancisville.net/ Be sure to click on all of the links: tourism > lodging > other lodging in the parish. Loads of places in that list that you just can't miss - and it keeps you in the shade! If you're into casinos, cross the Mississippi on the car-ferry, look around a little in New Roads http://pointbreezemotel.com/ and ease on up to the Paragon in Marksville. They've got a live alligator show on Saturdays. https://www.paragoncasinoresort.com/site95.php My family came to New Roads/Marksville 300 years ago - and that's where I am now! After that, I would start heading for the direction of Lafayette (where I went to college) and Randols Restaurant http://www.randols.com/ and while you're in that area, put Arnaudville and Grand Coteau on your list as well... you can certainly take a pretty picture there to take home to show your friends! and the 3rd weekend in July will be their 7 mile yard sale (between Arnaudville and Grand Coteau). http://www.cajuntravel.com/towns/grand_coteau.cfm yep - LOL ...a 7 mile long yard sale... too funny! but they do it twice a year! That takes you in about a 2 hour circle. If there's anything else you want to see - just let me know... there's TONS more!!!
