Question

Family trip to Quito and beyond

i

we are a family of 4 on our world trip for 1 year We arrive in Quito shortly where we have booked an apartment for 3 weeks. we then have a further 10 days unplanned.

We intend to use the apartment in Quito as a cheap base, doing day trips to reachable destinations (all suggestions welcome- we have Lonely Planet but it's always great to get ideas from fellow travellers)

We then have the 10 days unplanned. we want to to go to the Amazon for sure- the kids are really into wildlife and photography. I see there are loads of tour companies of course. Is that the best option with kids in tow, or is it as easy/cost effective to hire a driver instead?

All suggestions on the best places to go/things to see/how to do it are every welcome indeed

thanks guys

PS- Galapagos is not on our agenda unfortunately- the budget/US dollar does not allow
