It has always been a dream of mine to goto Bend, Oregon - what is the best time of year to go if you are a back country hiker, but also like skiing?

You may have to go twice or take some snowshoes. The best time of year to go if you want to hike is from late June through October. If you are there for skiing anytime between December and May.

In Bend and the surrounding area the snow can linger in the higher elevations making it very difficult to go onto the bigger mountains such as the sisters for a good day hike if it is to early in the year.

If you like skiing (XC or downhill) or snowshoeing, January is the time to visit Bend and Mt. Bachelor.
The High Desert Museum south of Bend is great to visit at any time of year. Spring and Summer are great times to drive the Cascade Lakes Highway.

What makes Bend in Central Oregon so appealing is the different seasons and numerous outdoor activities. The three sisters are great for hiking, the Deschutes River is awesome for river rafting, kayaking and fly fishing, drive the McKenzie Pass scenic byway in the fall, & check out the head of the Metolius River and Wizard Falls fish hatchery.

Any time of year is a good time to visit Bend!

I think the better question would be is there a bad time to go to Bend? I lived there for many years and of all the places I have traveled it is still top of my list.

It all depends on your outdoor interests. It is beautiful all year long with approximately 300 days of sun a year and the dry climate - there is not a lot of rain. If you are a warm weather person - the summers offer camping, amazing hikes, bike trails, river rafting, golfing, rock climbing, fishing, lakes, lakes and more lakes ...you name it. It stays chilly at night through mid June so I suggest if you want to camp July through the end of September.

If you are a snowbird - there is plenty of cross country ski trails, of course mt. bachelor, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and the list goes on.

If you need any specific tips about the area, I would be happy to give you more info about Bend itself or the outlying areas.
