Best and cheap places North Mexico &/or Baja for Christmas and New Year?

I am planning on being in Baja to see the grey whales in January, and am making my way up to the north of the country at the moment.
I have tried so many places on the internet to see if there is info anywhee, but I must be looking in the wrong places!

How far in advance do I need to book for Christmas and New Year, and what dates get booked up quickly?
ANy help would be gratefully received!

I live in Acapulco and I'm sorry I can't be much help on Baja. People who live here tell me that Loreto, on the Sea of Cortez, is the best place in B.C.S. so you might want to aim for there before heading farther south. Avoid the larger towns and ask a policeman for an economical hotel. There are lots of cheap but entirely acceptable hotels here in Acapulco and most other towns. The whales migrate past Acapulco, but the dates are not certain.
